HUAWEI P60 series launches uses Shape Memory Alloy AF and OIS from Cambridge Mechatronics

Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd (CML) is pleased to announce that its 8-wire Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator has been selected to enable Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Autofocus (AF) in the new flagship handsets: HUAWEI P60, HUAWEI P60 Pro and HUAWEI P60 Art.

The HUAWEI P60 series triple camera system features a 48MP main camera with a f/1.4 – f/4.0 ten-speed variable aperture with automatic scene-based switching. Compared to the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro, the image sensor format has increased in size, meaning heavier optics and larger variable aperture, which, for optimal light capturing capabilities, is attached to the lens. SMA actuators have inherently high force, ideal for handling these heavier loads.

The single SMA Lens Shift AF+OIS actuator used in the main camera module is enabling both AF and OIS concurrently, enabling world-leading stabilization and autofocus performance in a simpler, more compact and more cost-effective design. The 8-wire AF+OIS product has been designed as an integrated closed-loop camera and is free from electromagnetic interference (EMI).

At the time of writing, the HUAWEI P60 Pro handset top-scored in the DxOMark rankings with 156 points, with specific praise for the stabilization, autofocus and low-light performance in both stills photography and video modes.

CML’s actuator designs are shipping in high volume in multiple premium smartphones. For more details about Cambridge Mechatronics and SMA technology, please GET IN TOUCH.

About CML: Cambridge Mechatronics Limited (CML) is a world-leading developer of mechanical, optical, electrical, silicon and software designs for system level solutions using its Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) platform technology. Solutions such as actuators based on SMA wire (which is as thin as a human hair) can be controlled to the accuracy of the wavelength of light. These actuators are particularly suited to applications that require high levels of precision and force, in a fast, compact and lightweight design.
