Huawei launches the Pocket 2, a penta camera clamshell foldable phone

Huawei has launched the Huawei Pocket 2 on February 22nd 2024. Sporting some significant upgrades from the P50 Pocket, the Pocket 2 now incorporates an integrated AF+OIS actuator in its 50MP main camera as part of an external XMAGE quad-camera configuration and an internal selfie camera whilst maintaining a thickness of just 7.25mm when unfolded.

The Pocket 2 retains the distinctive dual-circle features on the rear when unfolded, one circular element containing a quad camera setup whilst the other circular element provides a display for notifications. The rear camera block features a 50MP main camera with single actuator AF+OIS (autofocus and optical image stabilisation), capable of capturing best-in-class images, even in low light conditions. In addition, there is a 12MP ultrawide camera, an 8MP 3x telephoto camera with OIS and a 2MP hyperspectral sensor for enhanced colour accuracy and light information. On the main display, a 10.7MP ultrawide camera is available for selfies and video calls.

The Huawei Pocket 2 incorporates a 4,520mAh battery, with 66W wired, 40W wireless and 7.5W reverse wireless charging capabilities. The Pocket 2 has dual LTPO OLED displays with refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. Furthermore, the handset supports two-way satellite connectivity and is IPX8 water and dust resistance rated. The handset will be able in 4 colour options, with glass and leather finishes, as well as a custom Art edition.

The Huawei Pocket 2 combines a refined design with a versatile camera system, and long-lasting battery life, making it a compelling option for users seeking a premium foldable experience. The phone is available to order and will start to ship from March 1st 2024.

Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd (CML) develops full system solutions for Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators, including actuator designs, dedicated controller ICs and performance algorithms. The SMA Lens Shift AF+OIS actuator, comprising 8-SMA wires, is a single actuator enabling world-leading stabilisation and autofocus performance in a simple and compact design. A significant advantage of the single AF+OIS SMA system is the ease of integration. In addition, it is a magnet-free design, ensuring no interference with other radio frequency (RF) components or cameras within the device. Such properties are especially beneficial in folding phones.

CML’s actuator designs are shipping in high volume in multiple premium smartphones. For more details about Cambridge Mechatronics and SMA technology, please GET IN TOUCH.
