Image Sensor Market Set to Boom
Friday, October 19th 2018
Industry sources report that leading CMOS image sensor (CIS) maker Sony has expanded its capacity in anticipation of a boom in CIS demand in 2019. It is expected that the 2019 demand will be fuelled in part by an increase in adoption of triple cameras, a topic that has previously been covered by CML’s Marketing Director Dominic Webber.
The anticipated increase in CIS demand is consistent with a recent CIS market report by analyst Yole Développement. Yole forecasts that the CIS market will enjoy a 9.4% CAGR between 2017 and 2023, which it says will be “driven mainly by smartphones integrating additional cameras”.
At its simplest level, CML expects that the integration of more camera modules into smartphones will lead to an increase in the size of the smartphone camera actuator market. CML expects that additional implications of adding more camera modules to smartphones include increasing pressure on camera size and furthering the issue of magnetic interference caused by placing multiple VCM actuators in close proximity. CML believes that its platform SMA technology is well suited to the multiple camera trend given that it is an intrinsically small, non-magnetic technology.
