Huawei unveils Pura X: A clamshell foldable with unique design and powerful camera features
On the 20th of March 2025, Huawei launched its latest innovation in the foldable smartphone market - the Huawei Pura X. It reimagines the traditional flip phone design by folding sideways to introduce a wider aspect ratio, offering users a mini tablet-like experience in a compact form factor. The handset also comes with advanced camera features with integrated Autofocus (AF) and optical image stabilisation (OIS).
The Huawei Pura X stands out with its unconventional flip phone design, opening sideways to reveal a 6.3-inch inner display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This approach offers a hybrid experience between flip phones and larger foldable devices, aiming to provide portability without compromising on display size.
A triple camera suite as well as a colour spectrum sensor has been packed into the front of the Pura X’s foldable frame. The main camera features a 50-megapixel (MP) RYYB sensor with a f/1.6 aperture and an advanced AF and OIS system. Huawei’s use of the RYYB colour filter enhances sensitivity to light compared to traditional RGB sensors. Complementing the main camera is a 8MP telephoto lens that offers 3.5x optical zoom, a f/2.4 aperture and OIS. The ultra-wide camera uses a 40MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture. The fourth sensor is a spectral image sensor dedicated to colour accuracy. This colour sensor works in conjunction with the main trio of cameras to refine image processing, particularly in mixed or artificial lighting. The internal display also features a 10MP camera for video calls when the screen device is unfolded.
The external cover screen measures 3.5 inches with a square 1:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 980 x 980 pixels. It supports LTPO technology, offering an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz, 2500 nits peak brightness, and vivid HDR content support. Opening the device reveals a 6.3-inch internal display with a 2120 x 1320 resolution and the same adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. The wide 16:10 screen enhances visibility, offering 30% more viewing area than standard 16:9 displays.
Running the newly upgraded HarmonyOS 5, the Pura X benefits from an overhauled kernel, a more efficient Ark Engine, and full cloud integration — boosting performance by up to 40% over the previous OS version.
The Pura X comes with a 4720mAh battery, supporting 66W wired and 40W wireless fast charging.
