HONOR debuts the Magic V Flip, its first clamshell folded handset, with Shape Memory Alloy OIS

On June 13th, 2024, Honor’s first clamshell vertical folding phone was officially unveiled. The Honor Magic V Flip combines high-end design, technology and SLR-level camera capabilities. The release of the Honor Magic V Flip means HONOR has a complete line-up of full-form folded handset configurations.

The Honor Magic V Flip was announced by HONOR CEO Mr George Zhao at a technology fashion show. He used the presentation to highlight the key features of the handset. With a thickness of 14.89mm when folded and 7.15mm when unfolded, the device is the slimmest on the market and very lightweight at only 193 grams. The external display has a 4-inch external screen size, 85% external screen-to-body ratio, and 2.87mm external screen frame.

The Magic V Flip main camera contains a 1/1.56” Sony IMX906 image sensor with 50MP resolution and f/1.9 aperture. This camera is equipped with state-of-the-art optical image stabilisation (OIS). There is also a 12MP ultrawide camera module that doubles as a macro lens and a 50MP front facing (selfie) camera using the Sony IMX816 sensor.

Combining the camera hardware with software, such as portrait engine algorithms, results in SLR-level photographic capabilities. Other examples are AI super macro automatic switching, AI group photo enhancement and support for SLR-level natural blur and skin tone adjustments.

The Honor Magic V Flip is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, with the software side covered by MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14 and a 4,800 mAh battery supported by 66W fast charging.

Introducing Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) OIS into the main camera enables improved image quality, especially in low light conditions. SMA actuator technology is well suited for folded handsets due to its compact size, low z-height, and lack of electromagnetic interference (EMI), especially critical when magnetic technology is used in the handset.

The 4-wire SMA Lens Shift OIS actuator technology from Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd is a mature product design and has shipped in over 45 million handsets to date. For more details about Cambridge Mechatronics and SMA technology, please GET IN TOUCH.
