Cambridge Mechatronics reaches milestone of 500 patents
Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd (CML), world leaders in the development of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators, announced today that it has reached the milestone of 500 patents pending or granted worldwide.
CML’s SMA technology includes autofocus (AF) and optical image stabilisation (OIS), and has been included in numerous of the world’s leading smartphone cameras. In addition, it has been regularly at the top of independent smartphone camera rankings, in recent years. The technology has shipped under licence in over 40 million devices to date.
CML’s more recent filings include innovative solutions for AR/VR wearables, considered by many in the industry as the next mobile computing platform, and that in time could potentially replace the smartphone. SMA’s core advantages of precision motion with high force, low power and compact form factor are as applicable to AR and VR camera devices as they are to smartphone cameras. These core advantages are also ideally suited to solving some of the major challenges facing display optics and computer vision. In addition, CML has developed a haptic glove to enhance the feeling of immersion in gaming or enterprise use cases and many more.
CML’s high quality IP portfolio includes over 200 patent families, and comes after over a decade of investment and research into SMA actuator technology. The portfolio includes IP covering mechanical, optical, electrical, algorithm and silicon design. Earlier this year, the UK patent office announced that CML came 24th in their list of the top 50 patent applicants.
“We’re proud of the innovative culture we have nurtured at CML” said Andrew Osmant, Managing Director of Cambridge Mechatronics. “Our talented team of over 130 employees have built a leading IP position, which means that our licenced customers can adopt our technology and develop market leading products.”
Some of CML’s most recent filings include innovative solutions for AR/VR, considered by many in the industry as the next mobile compute platform. CML’s unique SMA actuator technology is ideally suited to solving some of the major challenges facing display optics, computer vision and haptic feedback.
