Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd, the global leader in the design and precise control of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator technology, has hit a milestone of 800 patents granted and pending worldwide.

This accomplishment reinforces Cambridge Mechatronics’ position as an innovator in SMA system solutions for smartphone camera autofocus (AF) and optical image stabilisation (OIS). Cambridge Mechatronics’ designs and control technology has gained significant traction in top-tier smartphone cameras, with over 80 million devices featuring SMA technology shipped globally and helping cameras to achieve top rankings from independent testing experts like DxOMark.
In addition to the success in smartphone cameras, Cambridge Mechatronics is expanding its reach into new markets, including precision dosing in medical devices, optical actuators in XR headsets, and haptic feedback systems for smartphones, wearables, and gaming controllers.
The company’s extensive intellectual property (IP) portfolio, which includes over 200 patent families, spans a broad range of mechanical, optical, electrical, silicon and algorithm designs. According to the 2023 UK Patent Office report, CML has maintained its top 50 position for patent applications for the fifth consecutive year and has strengthened its top 50 spot with patents granted for the second year running.
